Whippendell Woods

Project Overview

We’re proud to announce the opening of a fully sanctioned mountain bike trail facility in Whippendell Woods, in partnership with Watford Borough Council.

This new trail area replaces previously unauthorised trails that were removed to protect the surrounding Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It has been carefully developed to balance conservation with the growing demand for safe, accessible cycling infrastructure.

Funded through the Watford Neighbourhood Grant, the project provides Watford residents with free access to high-quality mountain bike trails right on their doorstep. It marks a major step forward in delivering sustainable, inclusive off road cycling opportunities within the borough.

Cycling plays a vital role in promoting healthier communities and reducing health inequalities. This facility will be supported by subsidised coaching and events, helping to ensure that people of all ages and backgrounds, including those from disadvantaged groups, can take part.

We are also actively seeking partnerships with other community organisations to ensure the space remains inclusive and widely accessible. If you or your organisation would like to get involved, we welcome your interest.

Phase 1 - What's Planned

Location

Whippendell Woods are located to the west of Watford town centre and adjoin Cassiobury Park. The woodland can be accessed easily by bike from either Watford or Croxley Green and by car from junction 19 of the M25 and the A411 Hempstead Road. Parking is available at the Grove Mill Lane car park.

The primary purpose of the trail facilities is to provide access by bike for those living in the local area. This is a key part of the Bike Park Chilterns aim to provide doorstep to trail access by bike wherever possible.
